Our Privacy Guiding Principles

  • Your trust as a teacher member is paramount to us.
  • We are committed to creating a safe and secure online environment for all our visitors, Teacher Members and Student Users.
  • We do not include third party advertising messages, links or content of any kind within our online environment.
  • We exclusively use the login information provided by you for student access to your cloud based classroom for that purpose only. We never communicate with your students other than in response to their customer support inquiries.
  • We do not sell the personal information of Teacher Members or Student Users to third parties. We are a not-for-profit organization by design such that our mission and your trust will not be in conflict with a for-profit motive.
  • We take the protection of Teacher Member and Student User information very seriously.  In particular, Teacher Member credit card and related financial information is not stored on our site. There is never a need for student financial information.
  • We use your information and feedback to enhance the user experience and to inform the development of ever improving solutions to meet our members’ needs.

About NexGen Inquiry® Privacy Policy

NexGen Inquiry® is the national outreach program for the Van Andel Education Institute Science Academy. The Van Andel Education Institute is a Grand Rapids, Michigan based 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to advancing science education to increase the number of students choosing to pursue a career in science related fields. We are committed to your privacy. We understand how important it is to create a safe and secure environment for learners of all ages. We use the data we collect to provide you with a better experience and to fulfill our mission.

Our Privacy Notice describes what information we gather from Teacher Members, Student Users and others who visit and use the Website, how we use that information, and what we do to protect it. By visiting or using our Website, you expressly consent to the information handling practices described in this Privacy Notice.

Use of the Website and any information you provide on the Website are subject to the terms of this Privacy Notice, which is incorporated into and subject to our Terms of Service.

Data Collection and Usage

We may collect the following types of information on our Website:

  1. Teacher MEMBER PERSONAL INFORMATION
    When you register as a Teacher Member, browse and use the Website, you may provide what is generally called “personally identifiable information” or “personal data” (such as your full name, email address, or optionally a photograph) that can be used to identify you. We call this data “Personal Information.”
  2. Student User PERSONAL INFORMATION
    When you register as a Student User, browse and use the Website, you may provide what is generally called “personally identifiable information” or “personal data” (Exclusively limited to unique identification for the account as identified by the Teacher Member or Student User, which may include first and last name and optionally an email address) that can be used to identify you. We call this data “Personal Information.”
  3. Information about your use of the website
    We may collect information about your use of certain Website features, such as your usage of our community, areas of interest, and use of tools. This helps us improve our services for you.
  4. INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM OTHER USERS.
    We may make available certain features on the Website that allow other Users to provide us information (i.e. Tell a Friend or Student Group Editing). This information may include Personal Information.
  5. TECHNICAL INFORMATION
    To provide the best Teacher Member, Student User and visitor experience, we use various technologies that automatically record certain technical information from your browser or device, including standard log files, web beacons, or pixel tags. This technical information may include your Internet Protocol (IP) address, browser type, internet service provider (ISP), referring or exit pages, click stream data, operating system, and the dates and times that you visit the Website and assists us in understanding how our Users are using our Website.As with most websites, we may send one or more cookies – small text files containing a string of alphanumeric characters – to your computer. Cookies remember information about your activities on a website and help us improve your experience. NexGen Inquiry® Website may use both session cookies and persistent cookies. A session cookie disappears automatically after you close your browser. A persistent cookie remains after you close your browser and may be used by your browser on subsequent visits to the Website. You can, however, remove a persistent cookie at any time. Please review your web browser “Help” file to learn the proper way to modify your cookie settings.     We may collect and store information about Teacher Member, Student User and visitor geographic locations to understand regional differences provide allowing us to further develop solutions for our members.

    We may obtain information, including Personal Information, from third parties or sources other than the Website. If we combine or associate information from other sources with Personal Information that we collect through the Website, we will treat the combined information as Personal Information in accordance with this Privacy Notice.We use this information in the following ways:
    1. To enhance our Website and the services we provide.
    2. To understand how Members and others use our Website.
  8. LIMITATIONS ON ACCESS BY EMPLOYEES AND AUTHORIZED PARTIES
    Van Andel Education Institute’s employees, agents and contractors must have a legitimate business reason to access Personal Information you provide. We may share Teacher Member and Student User Personal Information with third-party service providers, including outside contractors or agents who help us manage our information activities, but they may only use your Personal Information to provide us with a specific service and not for any other purpose.

Data Sharing

We take great care to protect the information you provided to us. We do not rent or sell Personal Information that we collect from Users with third parties for any commercial purposes.

We provide certain features that may allow you to share information with other Users. For example, as a Teacher Member, you may choose to populate your profile with your name, short biography, and location. Or you may ask questions that are visible to other Members. Whenever you share information with other Members of our Websites, any Personal Information that you choose to include in, or is associated with, such User Postings will be accessible by others. As with most online services, once you make your Personal Information available to others in any of these ways, it may be collected and used by the recipients without restriction.

For Teacher Members:

We will share data with third-party applications that are part of our service, including but not limited to our internal Member Community Discussion boards.

We may share anonymous or aggregate data to improve our services and learn more about our Users.

We may share data with social networks at your request.

For Student Users:

We will not share data with third-party applications or related entities.

For both Teacher Members and Student Users:

In certain occasions, we may work with business partners to improve our services or offerings. We may disclose automatically collected and other aggregate non-Personal Information to authorized business partners to conduct research on online education or assist in understanding the usage, viewing, and demographic patterns for certain programs, content, services, promotions, and/or functionality on the Website.

We will share data when required by law.

Van Andel Education Institute may also disclose User information if required to do so by law, or if we have a good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with local, state, federal, international, or other applicable laws (such as U.S. Copyright law) or respond to a court order, judicial or other government subpoena, or warrant, or administrative request. In some cases, we may make such disclosures without first providing notice to Users.

We may share data in the context of a change of business, including a merger or acquisition.

In the event that NexGen Inquiry® is acquired by or merged with a third-party entity, we may transfer or assign the information that we have collected from Users as part of such merger, acquisition, sale, or other change of control.

We may share data when necessary or appropriate to protect Van Andel Education Institute or others.

We may disclose information that we believe, in good faith, is appropriate or necessary to take precautions against liability; to protect Van Andel Education Institute from fraudulent, abusive, or unlawful uses; to investigate and defend ourselves against any third-party claims or allegations; to assist government enforcement agencies; to protect the security or integrity of the Website; or to protect the rights, property, or personal safety of Van Andel Education Institute, our Members, or others.

Member Choices

There is a minimal amount of Personal Information you must provide to participate on our site as a Member. You may always decline to share your Personal Information. If you do so, however, we will not be able to provide to you certain features and functionalities found on our Website. You may later enable or access those features by providing the necessary Personal Information.

Student Users

As a service to our Teacher Members, we provide tools to support your classroom including tools for your students. Like you we are committed to your students’ privacy. So that your students can have access to their individual and team tools in your classroom, there is a minimal amount of information required to support that access. This is simply limited to a unique login name and password controlled by you as the Teacher Member.

We exclusively use the login information provided by you for student access to your cloud based classroom for that purpose only. We never communicate with your students other than in response to their customer support inquiries.

Restrictions on Student Users:

Some other features of the Website may, however, permit a Student User to enter free-form text through which the Student User could enter Personal Information that would be visible to other Student Users. This may occur, for instance, if a Student User enters personal information within a shared investigation.

Our approach to data security

To protect your privacy and security, we take reasonable steps to verify your identity. When using our online Member services we require you to provide certain Personal Information and password to confirm your identity. As always we recommend you create and maintain a strong password to help ensure the security of your account.

We strive to ensure our Website and information sent to us are safe, but no security measures are perfect.

We partner only with secure hosting organizations who ensure an acceptable level of physical, managerial, and technical safeguards designed to preserve the integrity and security of your Personal Information. We cannot, however, ensure or warrant the security of any or all of the information you transmit to our site, and you do so at your own risk. We make commercially reasonable efforts to ensure the security of our systems. However, please note that this is not a guarantee that such information may not be accessed, disclosed, altered, or destroyed by breach of any of our physical, technical, or managerial safeguards.

We will notify you electronically or via the Website if we experience a data security incident that could affect you.

Van Andel Education Institute may modify or revise this Privacy Notice from time to time. We will notify Users of any change to our Privacy Notice by posting the revised Privacy Notice with an updated date of revision on our Website.
